The Pen Pal Update

I wanted to give you all an update on where we're at with The Pen Pal Project. What started off as a way to get my kids to improve their handwriting has evolved into a fun summer project involving kids from 5 different states (so far).  Right now I have 33 kids officially signed up--that means I have their names and mailing information on hand and they are just waiting to be paired up with a pal so they can begin writing. Many of you have expressed an interest in getting involved, but I can't sign your child up without his/her information.

I had no idea what to expect when I proposed this and I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised. It's amazing how many of us agree that our kids need to get back to writing letters and making those connections with other kids. In this digital/online age, we are losing that personal relationship with people. I hope that this will inspire our kids to not only write more, but also to seek out new friendships.

There are still a few days left to get on board. This is not a long term commitment. We are just asking that you and your child commit to about a letter a week for the summer. If your child wishes to write beyond the summer, that's between all of you. Be sure to tell your friends, your family, your church group, your co-op. Friday is the deadline to get your child's name in, and then I will use the weekend to pair everyone up and send out the pen pal information on the 1st. We have a good mix of kids so far but I would love to see this list explode over the next 2 days.

I want this to be a success. I want our children to find joy in writing letters. I want our children to make new friends. If all goes well, I will do this again next summer and hopefully we will get even more kids on board.

So remember, send your child's info to my email at and tell your friend/sister/teacher/co-worker/bank teller to add their child's name to the list.
